My Year With ChatGPT: Reflection on Growth, Learning, and Intentional Work

Published on 16 January 2026 at 09:52

Over the past year, ChatGPT became more than a digital tool in my workflow. It became a thinking partner—a space where professional development, personal reflection, and long-term planning intersected.

What started as a curiosity evolved into a consistent practice of asking better questions, clarifying ideas, and working with more intention.

This is a reflection on how technology, when used thoughtfully, can support both career growth and personal alignment.

Using ChatGPT for Professional Development

Much of my year focused on structured learning, particularly in preparation for the aPHR exam and deeper exploration of human resources, organizational development, and DEI work.

ChatGPT supported that process by helping me:

  • Break down complex HR concepts

  • Connect theory to real-world application

  • Study more efficiently without losing depth

Rather than replacing my learning, it helped me engage with the material more actively—asking follow-up questions, reframing ideas, and testing my understanding.

Alongside formal study, I maintained a balanced reading rhythm, alternating professional development books with pleasure reads. That balance reinforced an important lesson: sustainable growth requires both discipline and curiosity.

Turning Information into Insight

Another way ChatGPT supported my growth this year was through working with data.

I used it alongside spreadsheets I created to organize information, spot patterns, and make sense of details that would have felt overwhelming before. Whether I was structuring a worksheet, refining formulas, or thinking through how to present information clearly, the process helped me become more comfortable and intentional with data.

I’m not a data expert, but I do have a certification in Excel—and this experience helped me put that knowledge into practice. Instead of just knowing how tools work, I focused on using them to answer questions and support decisions.

What felt most meaningful was seeing how small improvements—cleaner layouts, clearer calculations, better organization—added up to work that was more useful and easier to interpret.

This was a quiet but important shift: moving from completing tasks to creating tools that actually supported understanding and follow-through.

Curiosity Beyond Productivity

Not every interaction was goal-driven—and that mattered.

I explored travel ideas, compared destinations, and deep-dived into books and television simply out of interest. These moments of curiosity reminded me that creativity and joy are not distractions from meaningful work; they are part of what sustains it.

A well-rounded professional life leaves room for exploration.

Preserving Legacy Through Intentional Work

One of the most meaningful projects I worked on this year was building a multigenerational family tree for my grandsons.

This wasn’t just documentation—it was legacy-building. Organizing names, relationships, and histories became an exercise in honoring the past while creating something tangible for the future.

Using ChatGPT to structure and manage that project reinforced an idea I carry into my professional life as well: what we build thoughtfully tends to last.

A Space for Reflection

One of the most unexpected benefits was how often I used ChatGPT for reflection. I worked through relationship check-ins, emotional prompts, and moments of uncertainty by writing them out, revising them, and seeing my thoughts take shape on the page.

Sometimes clarity doesn’t come from having the answer—it comes from hearing yourself think.

This process helped me slow down, choose my words more intentionally, and respond rather than react. That alone made the tool worthwhile.

Looking Ahead

This past year has been about more than learning or completing tasks—it’s been about alignment: aligning my actions with my values, my goals, and the way I want to show up in both life and work.

As I move into the year ahead, I’m focused on building on that momentum: continuing to grow, apply what I’ve learned, and create meaningful impact in the projects and relationships that matter most.

If a tool can support clarity, reflection, and purposeful action, then this past year has shown me just how powerful intentional use can be—and I’m excited to see what comes next.
