The Way Autumn Should Feel

As the leaves begin to fall and the morning air turns crisp, a symphony of seasonal aromas wafts through the air, filling the shops with the scents of candles and potpourri. This is my favorite time of year.

So when my little town announced its annual Oktoberfest, my excitement was palpable. I envisioned a perfect day with my sibling-family date, strolling through the vibrant festivities. We would meander through the streets, the sound of live music lifting our spirits, savoring delicious seasonal treats, and exploring local vendors showcasing their remarkable talents and crafts. Laughter would echo around us as we created cherished memories, each moment a celebration of autumn's beauty and togetherness.

Afterwards, we returned to my home for a few delightful surprises—gifts for my second-youngest sibling from all of us. True to form, I discovered I had an eclectic assortment of items to share, from a festive Christmas-themed table cover to two jars of cilantro. I did mention it was random!

But the highlight of the day, aside from being surrounded by the people who mean the world to me, was when the birthday guy turned to me and said, “I’m sitting here and feel so comfortable. This is what autumn should feel like.”

Let me paint a picture: my favorite time of year begins, and I revel in decorating for the seasons and holidays. On this particular day, you’re welcomed at the front door by vibrant pumpkins and cheerful mums. Once you step inside, the inviting aroma of a “Leaves” candle from Bath & Body Works envelops you, wrapping you in the essence of fall.

Leaf garlands spiral gracefully along the banister, archway, and chandelier, crafting a warm, inviting atmosphere that envelops the entire home. Cheerful knickknacks adorned with phrases like “Hello Autumn” and “Fall is my favorite color” lend delightful accents, infusing each space with the essence of the season.

And if I may boast a little, I don’t spend a fortune to achieve this cozy charm. I’m not too proud to admit that the dollar store is my trusty ally, while I occasionally indulge in a splurge at Home Goods, Michaels, and other similar gems.

All that said, after refreshing the house with a new coat of paint and adding my seasonal décor, I settled back and smiled, my heart warm with the coziness my brother felt. It brought to mind a memory from years ago when a friend of my kids remarked during her visit, “This feels like a home.” I’m still smiling from that compliment, Mike.
