You’re the Backbone of the Business—Act Like It

For too long, administrative professionals have been downplaying their roles—minimizing their contributions with phrases like “I just keep things running” or “I’m just an admin.” These modest statements, while well-intentioned, don’t begin to reflect the impact we have on organizational success. Let’s be clear: we are not “just” anything.
We are the operational core.
The strategic partners.
The silent engines behind execution.
The masters of coordination.
It’s time to elevate the way we talk about what we do—and in doing so, elevate how others see us.

Language matters—especially when it comes to how we talk about our work. Small shifts in how we describe our roles can better reflect the value we bring. Instead of saying, “I just keep things running,” try, “I optimize processes and ensure seamless operations.” Rather than, “I support the team,” consider, “I serve as a strategic partner in driving team outcomes.” If you often say, “I wear a lot of hats,” you might reframe it as, “I manage multiple operational priorities across functions.” Instead of, “I’m behind the scenes,” try, “I oversee the systems that power our execution.” And most importantly, never downplay your impact with, “I’m just an admin.” A more accurate reflection might be, “I’m an administrative operations professional.” These small language upgrades don’t just change how others perceive you—they shift how you see yourself.

When you speak confidently about your contributions, you position yourself as strategic, essential, and worthy of investment. This shift doesn’t just change how others see you—it changes how you see you. And that opens doors to more:

  • More leadership opportunities
  • More influence
  • More career growth
