Books I Reached for When I Didn’t Want Advice

Sometimes, life doesn’t need advice. Sometimes, it doesn’t need motivation, strategies, or solutions. Sometimes, it just needs space—a pause where I can escape into someone else’s world, someone else’s story, and simply be. These are the books I reach for when I don’t want advice, when I don’t want to be told what to do, think, or feel.

1. Fiction That Feels Like a Hug

There’s something deeply comforting about fiction that lets me disappear into its pages. Freida McFadden’s novels, for instance, have this unique ability to wrap me in suspense without judgment or instruction. Her stories remind me that life can be unpredictable, messy, and thrilling—and that’s okay. I don’t have to fix anything while I’m reading.

2. Escapist Reads That Don’t Pretend to Solve Problems

Sometimes, I crave thrillers or mysteries where my only goal is to follow the twists and turns. Books like Harlan Coben or Karin Slaughter give me adrenaline, suspense, and plot twists without slipping in life lessons or guidance. They remind me that for a few hours, I don’t need to analyze, plan, or strategize—I just need to turn the page.

3. Poetry and Reflective Literature

Poetry doesn’t preach. It whispers. It observes. It reflects. Reading Mary Oliver or Rumi allows me to lean into emotion without a roadmap. I’m not supposed to “do” anything with the feelings—they exist, beautifully, just as they are. And that’s exactly what I need sometimes: permission to simply feel.

4. Novels with Imperfect Characters

Characters who fail, who stumble, who make bad choices—they remind me I’m not alone in my imperfections. These stories aren’t meant to teach me lessons; they’re meant to be lived alongside. I reach for authors who embrace messy humanity, because it’s comforting to know that flaws are part of being alive.

5. Books That Are Purely for Pleasure

Sometimes, the book is a luxury, a purely indulgent experience. Whether it’s a gripping thriller, a clever romance, or a whimsical fantasy, these are books I pick up for the joy of reading, not the hope of becoming “better” or “smarter.” They remind me that reading can exist simply for the pleasure of it—and that pleasure is enough.
