Holiday Classics, the Laughs, and the New Gems You Might Have Missed

Published on 2 January 2025 at 16:50

With so many On-Demand, streaming services, and cable channels offering a smorgasbord of Christmas classics, it can feel like there’s no end to the festive viewing options. And while I’ll always have a soft spot for the timeless classics, there are a few newer releases that have found their way into my seasonal rotation — and maybe they’ll make their way into yours, too.

The Classics We Keep Coming Back To

I don’t know about you, but no matter how much new content hits the streaming services each year, there’s something about the nostalgia of classic holiday films that will never fade. These films hold a special place in my heart, and they’re the ones I turn to year after year when I need a reminder of what the season is all about (even if it’s just for some laughs). Some of my all-time favorites include:

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000): . Jim Carrey puts the dark twist I love
  • Frosty the Snowman: Nothing can melt your heart like a cute snowman. Well, that is, aside from my grandbabies
  • A Christmas Story: If my husband asks for that darn lamp one more time! *growl*
  • National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation: Family, hustle and bustle, making everything perfect, and chaos. Oh....the holidays
  • Bad Santa (don’t judge me): Raunchy holiday humor
  • Bad Moms Christmas: For the moms (and dads) work hard to make the holidays perfect, but you say, "Nope! Not this year!" Find a release. Take easy. It all works out in the end
  • Harold & Kumar's Christmas: A bit ridiculous, but hilarious

When You Need Something Different: Newer Gems to Add to Your List

There are times when you crave something different — not the same old sappy Lifetime movies or the repetitive reruns of the same handful of films. I’ve found a few newer releases that managed to break through the clutter of holiday programming and made me laugh, cry, and even left me on the edge of my seat. They’ve earned a spot on my rotation list for years to come. Here are a few of them:

1. RedOne: A little more action and a lot of holiday fun.

2. Santa Class: This one may have flown under the radar for many. A refreshing change of pace from the usual Christmas films.

3. Christmas in Paradise: Escape the cold and head somewhere warm. Lighthearted, feelgood movie. Expect to be a little sentimental. (Spoiler alert: Why does someone always have to be dying or died from cancer?)

4. Jack in Time [for Christmas]: It’s worth a watch if you’re looking for something a little different.

5. Holiday Holdup: Not great acting but entertaining enough if you want something different (for a one-time watch)

6. Holiday Heist: Same sentiments as previous

What About You?

Now, I’m curious to know: Did you come across any new holiday films or shows that made you laugh, cry, or simply feel the spirit of the season?

We all have our own personal holiday viewing traditions. Which has made their way into your rotation. Whether it’s the heartwarming classics or something new and surprising, there’s always room for a little more holiday cheer. So, share your favorites with me — I’m ready to add a few more to my watchlist for 2025!
