The Spirit of Giving: During the Holidays and Beyond

Published on 13 December 2024 at 09:07

During the holiday season, I’m reminded of how truly blessed I am. While there are always things I could want, do, or become, I try to focus first on how far I’ve come and the blessings I’ve received. Still, my heart aches for those less fortunate, and I often find myself wishing I could do more to help.

I’ll admit with some shame that it’s been a while since I’ve volunteered with organizations that are close to my heart—especially those that support families in need. One such organization is the Breathing Room Foundation, which offers year-round support to families battling cancer, from yard work to providing holiday gifts.

I also think of my local community cupboard, which provides food and produce to families. Mattie Dixon Community Cupboard also supplies families with gift cards and holiday food baskets, so no one has to go without during the holiday season. These organizations are a reminder of how much help is needed and how much more I could be doing to give back.

So many people dream about what they’d do if they won the lottery—imagining the extravagant purchases, the travel, the lifestyle changes. While it’s easy to get lost in wishful thinking, I’ve always had a different kind of mental list—one filled with causes I would love to support if I had the financial means to do so. While I may not have millions to give away, the dream of being able to support these causes with abundance is always in my heart, fueling my desire to give back in any way I can.

I hope I’m not alone in feeling that the holiday season sparks reflection on the power of giving and the causes that matter most. Whether it’s a small act of kindness or a larger commitment of time, resources, or support, every contribution truly makes a difference. We may not all have a fortune to share, but each of us has something valuable to offer. So, what cause tugs at your heart? Whether it’s volunteering, donating, or simply spreading awareness, let’s use our gifts—big or small—to create lasting change in the lives of others. Together, we can make a real impact, not just this season, but throughout the year.
