Forced to Pause, Learning to Breathe
I’ve never been great at resting. There’s comfort in busyness—checking off tasks, replying to emails, scrolling just one more time, keeping everything moving. Even when busyness isn’t serving me, it feels…necessary. Like if I stop, the world will notice—or worse, everything will collapse.
Right now, life has decided to force me into rest. I’m recovering from a procedure, and suddenly, stillness isn’t optional. It’s mandatory. And let me tell you: it’s harder than I imagined.
Phones buzz, laptops hum, tablets glare with unfinished tasks—and yet, I can’t touch them. There’s a strange tension in this pause. My mind races: “Do I need to reply to that email? Check social media? Plan tomorrow?” But the answer is simple: no. Not today. Today, rest is the job.
This forced pause has been humbling. I’ve realized that rest is not a reward—it’s a skill. Something we have to practice, not something we earn. And in a world that treats productivity as a badge of honor, practicing rest can feel almost rebellious.
I’ve started small. Letting the phone stay on silent. Closing the laptop. Sitting without scrolling, without multitasking, without feeling guilty. And in those moments, something surprising happens: my mind slows, my body relaxes, my energy starts to come back—not weaker, not slower, but sharper and calmer.
There’s also a little humor in all of this. Who knew doing “nothing” could feel so…active? My brain wants to keep moving, but my body says, “Nope, not today.” Even the simplest things—reading a book, watching a show, breathing without checking notifications—feel revolutionary.
The lesson I’m learning is simple but profound: rest isn’t a reward for surviving life’s chaos. It’s a skill that keeps us alive for life. And maybe the most radical act we can commit in this modern, always-on world is to simply pause, breathe, and remind ourselves that it’s okay to do nothing for a little while.
So here I am, forced to pause, slowly learning the skill I never thought I needed as badly as I do. And honestly? It feels like reclaiming a small piece of sanity in a world that never stops demanding attention.
